In October 2017, we started a project tagged ‘PP40 Waste to Playground’ where we visited 40 schools in all the 11 local government of our city, Ibadan South-West Nigeria during a one year period. We noticed 2 major problem area in our community.
The first is that people discard their wastes indiscriminately in the gutters,in the middle of the roads and in the drainage without any knowledge of wastes recycling and up cycling.
The second problem we identified was that the public schools don’t have a playground and are not doing Art as a subject which means there’s no proper programm to inspire creativity and innovations in the students. So we decided to take action by teaching the students and teachers how to use what we have abundantly, that is ‘wastes’ to create what they don’t have, which is ‘playground’. We were able to teach and explore recycled art in a one day activities with over 16,000 students and 1000 teachers in 40 schools. The initiative was completed Nov 2018.
